Please note that this specialized program is being developed in conjunction with your professional counterpart organization. The time, order, location, and content of the professional meetings are subject to availability of and confirmation by the hosts, as well as the relevant background and expertise of the traveling participants. Participation is strongly encouraged for all scheduled meetings as a general professional courtesy to your professional hosts. 

**A limited number of single rooms are available at extra cost on a first-come, first-served basis, but availability cannot be guaranteed. Academic Travel Abroad will assist persons requesting a roommate. However, neither a single room nor a share can be guaranteed. Participants will be contacted to confirm/deny space in a single occupancy room while making note of the request for a roommate. If we are successful in finding a suitable roommate, the enrollee will be refunded the single supplement. If we are unsuccessful in finding a suitable roommate, the enrollee will remain enrolled with the single occupancy package.

Depart the U.S. on individual flights to Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport. Enjoy an afternoon of sight-seeing in Canada’s capital. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner. (Dinner)

Day 2 — Monday, September 24, 2018

After breakfast at the hotel, gather for an overview and discussion on the Canadian legal system followed by a discussion on the Canadian healthcare system. In the afternoon, meet with NAELA counterparts to learn more about how elder law is practiced in Canada and the primary issues that arise regularly for the elderly. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Day 3 — Tuesday, September 25, 2018

After breakfast, meet with representatives from the Canadian Center for Elder Law to learn about assisted care facilities. Next, pay a visit to the Advocacy Centre for the Elderly (ACE) to hear about community outreach for legal services to seniors. Enjoy a visit to the Supreme Court (pending government confirmation) before enjoying your evening at leisure. (Breakfast)

Day 4 — Wednesday, September 26, 2018

Check out of the hotel. Depart by train to Montreal (approximately two hours). Enjoy lunch at a trendy Montreal café right downtown. Then, take a walking tour of Old Montreal and discover the city’s beautiful 19th century architecture. Next, meet with representatives of Veteran Affairs Canada - a department with the Canadian government dedicated to providing services for war veterans. Tour a local veteran care facility and discuss veteran care issues and how services and types of care relate to the overall Canadian healthcare system. Enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Day 5 — Thursday, September 27, 2018

After breakfast, meet with agency officials that handle legal issues for the elderly with disabilities and those with special needs. Next, visit with attorneys from the elder law section of the Canadian Bar Association to discuss legal concepts that are regularly applied to the elderly and those with special needs, such as advance health care directives. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon on your own. (Breakfast)

Day 6 — Friday, September 28, 2018

In the morning, visit a long-term care facility for seniors and meet with staff to discuss the cultural philosophy involved in their care. Discover Montreal at your leisure, from the prestigious Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to the verdant Park Mont Royal with sweeping views of the city. Enjoy a farewell dinner as a group tonight. (Breakfast, Dinner)

Day 7 — Saturday, September 29, 2018

Check out of the hotel. If time allows, visit one of Montreal’s great public food markets before returning home. Departures are out of Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport, about 20 KM from downtown. If participating on extension, depart by train to Quebec City. (Breakfast)
